PetterSteel Awarded the Chamber of Commerce’s “Carbon Footprint Calculated” Label

PetterSteel Oy has published its carbon footprint for 2024: 179.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e). The calculation was carried out in accordance with the internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), and as a result, the company has been awarded the Central Chamber of Commerce’s “Carbon Footprint Calculated” label.

This is the first time PetterSteel has published its carbon footprint figures publicly. At the same time, it sends a clear message to everyone we work with: sustainability is an important part of how we operate.

What Does the Calculated Carbon Footprint Tell Us?

The calculation covers Scope 1 emissions, which are direct greenhouse gas emissions generated by the company’s own operations. These include, for example, fuel consumption from company-owned vehicles and machinery, emissions from combustion equipment used on company premises, and other direct emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels.

Scope 2 emissions, in turn, refer to indirect emissions arising from the production of purchased energy, such as electricity, district heating, or cooling energy. Although these emissions are generated where the energy is produced, they are included in the carbon footprint of the organization that consumes the energy.

The measured result (179.2 tCO₂e) provides PetterSteel with a clear baseline against which future measurements can be compared and progress in emissions reduction can be monitored.

The calculation does not include Scope 3 emissions, which cover emissions across the value chain, such as those associated with suppliers, transportation, or the use of products. PetterSteel will establish its long-term emissions reduction targets once the Scope 3 assessment has been completed. This work is currently underway.

The “Carbon Footprint Calculated” Label Is Part of PetterSteel’s Commitment to Transparent Communication

The carbon footprint calculation was carried out in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, using up-to-date emissions factors and comprehensive consumption data.

Before awarding the “Carbon Footprint Calculated” label, the Finland Chamber of Commerce reviewed the calculation to ensure that it had been completed and that there were no obvious deficiencies, such as missing emissions factors. The label demonstrates that the carbon footprint calculation has been carried out appropriately and that the results are publicly available.

PetterSteel’s CEO, Petteri Heimonen, sees the calculation above all as a tool for long-term emissions reduction efforts.

“This calculation provides us with a solid benchmark and valuable insight into where our largest sources of emissions originate and where we can have the greatest impact. Transparency is important to us, which is why we are publishing these figures openly,” says Heimonen.

From Emissions Monitoring to Product-Specific Declarations

Going forward, PetterSteel’s carbon footprint results will be updated annually in accordance with the relevant guidelines, based on the emissions generated during the previous year.

The company also plans to launch the calculation and implementation of product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) next year. These will provide customers and partners with even greater transparency regarding the environmental impacts of PetterSteel’s products.
