PetterSteel to Deliver the Sheet Metal Works for Kuopio’s New K-Citymarket
Kuopio’s third K-Citymarket is currently under construction in Haapaniemi. The new 12,000-square-metre shopping centre is scheduled to open in spring 2026, with Jalon Rakentajat Oy serving as the main contractor.
The project is one of the most significant commercial construction developments in Kuopio in decades. In an interview with Yle, Kesko’s Construction Consultant Teemu Heiskanen estimated that the previous project of comparable scale was Matkus Shopping Centre, which was built between 2011 and 2012.
PetterSteel Responsible for an Extensive Sheet Metal Package
PetterSteel is responsible for the building’s sheet metal works as part of the project. The scope quite literally covers the entire sheet metal package—from manufacturing and project management to installation.
All sheet metal products are manufactured at PetterSteel’s own factory in Kuopio. The commercial building will include flashing works for roof penetrations such as ventilation stacks, edge flashings for the bitumen roof, various joint profiles for the façades, window flashings, door and overhead door finishing details, as well as a substantial amount of interior construction and finishing sheet metal work.
It is estimated that as much as 9 kilometres of sheet metal products will be installed in the building. The roof alone contains approximately 100 penetrations requiring flashing work.
An Exceptionally Large Project by Local Standards
According to PetterSteel, the company was selected for the project thanks to its reliability, experience, and proven ability to deliver projects on schedule. Its strong reputation as a local supplier and track record of successful projects certainly helped, although pricing and schedule commitments were ultimately the key factors in the tendering process.
“The competition was tough, but we stayed in the running until the very end and were ultimately selected as the partner for the project. With years of industry experience, we are able to produce highly accurate estimates of project scope and labour requirements, even for complex projects. We are delighted to be involved in delivering such a significant project in Kuopio together with another local company,” says Petteri Heimonen, CEO of PetterSteel.
Previous projects completed together by PetterSteel and Jalon Rakentajat include the Lidl store in Inkilänmäki, Kuopio, as well as several residential apartment developments. The partnership has therefore already proven to be effective. As in every project, planning ahead, resource allocation, and project management play a key role in ensuring successful delivery.
“One of the most important things is our ability to take full ownership of the project as a whole. Contractors know they can rely on us to do exactly that. When that level of trust is in place, collaboration works smoothly. Although this is a large and multi-phase project, it is very familiar territory for us,” Heimonen explains.
What Does This Mean for the Construction Industry?
Projects of this scale are relatively rare even for PetterSteel. While the company has completed several comparable—and even larger—commercial developments in Southern Finland, the new K-Citymarket clearly ranks among the largest commercial construction projects in the Kuopio region in recent decades.
PetterSteel would like to thank Jalon Rakentajat Oy for their trust and confidence and looks forward to close cooperation throughout the project.
